Tell us about how you got started with your art.
I have always been considered the “Artsy” person in my family. I have always had a passion for art and creating. When I really think about it I can truly say that I knew that I loved to draw back in the second grade. After I graduated high school I perused another career but my heart was always telling me to peruse my dream of being an artist.
What is the one thing that inspires you the most in your artwork?
One thing that inspires me in my artwork is the beauty and emotions of the Black Culture.
Are there any artists out there that you particularly love (past or present)?
Well there is one artist that I have grown to love over the past few years and his name is Eric Francis. His work and technique is gorgeous, and he has taught me a lot in terms of the technique of painting. I have always loved the work of the “Art Masters” such as Leonardo da Vinci and one of my favorites Alphonse Mucha.
What do you want to portray in your work about natural hair to the public?
I would love for African American girls and women that come in contact with my art to see the natural God given beauty that they possess and hopefully they will be encouraged to showcase themselves in their own natural form as opposed to seeking the media given “Europeanized” version of beauty.
What sparked your interest in natural hair art?
I love my natural hair and the versatility that natural hair offers and I choose to share it with the world through my art.
Do you have any natural hair guru favorites?
Yes I have a ton, but one of y all time favs is Whitney better known as Naptural85. I love how she portrays herself to the world through her natural hair and natural lifestyle, not to mention she is a graphic designer like myself, which draws me to her even more.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in entering the world of natural hair art?
One of the main pieces of advice I would give is learn the basics and techniques of drawing. Drawing is the foundation to cross over to any medium. Another piece of advice I would give is to not give up. There has been many nights where I have gotten frustrated with a piece and wanted to throw in the towel but I didn’t. I always tell myself it will pay off in the end.
What are your future plans in your art career?
Well currently I am a full time student at The Art Institute getting my Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. Once I finish I would love to open my own art studio that would be open to the public where people could come and watch me create/paint. I would also love to offer “Kinky Curly” paint classes at my studio.
What is your favorite quote?
Phillipians 4:13 I can do all things with Christ who strengthens me.
